When someone asks you how was your day, you immediately run the fastest recursive algorithm in the history of brain power to pick out all the bright spots from your day. You rank them all and then come back with an answer of something akin to “okay”, “meh”, “decent”, “workable”, etc, etc. Maybe in comparison to the once a year thing that your friends were doing or the illogical comparison’s to someone InstaStory that’s how your day was. Which do I do first? Which do I focus on more? Do I Lead the Team on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Code the other days of the week? What if someone has a question on a Wednesday do I push it to Thursday? You do both – it’s not an Either/Or, it’s a Both/And equation. We need leaders who will only lead in Software about as much as we need coders who will only code. Aren’t the days when you come in to work that much more exciting when they start off totally different? There was some kind of emergency the night before that has reset everyone’s morning? A server or tenant went down which has taken down a key server and forced you to work different today? Someone isn’t in and you need to cover for them in a key meeting? I have a project, it’s been going on for a few years – it’s filled with many doubts, unknowns and fear. Will it work or won’t it? Will it make sense or will it fail? What will it be in the end? At the end of 2018, I made the commitment to finish it in the first half of 2019 and let the chips fall where they may. Long deliveries are never easy, they go on forever and at some point, you just… need… to finish it.
