Out of Office Evolved

Out of Office started as a physical associate with a building.  You were either in the building or out of it – hence the auto-response. But now we are here, there, and everywhere and most of the time we are outside of the office. Presence engines use “Not Connected”, “Offline”, “Unavailable” or “Away” to explain when someone cannot take an instant message or call and this is shown by a variety of colors of icons as to when and where they are, sometimes with little notes attached. Focussing on Team Wins

A team wins when a team comes together. Those wins will always be subjective to you as the leader of the team – you know the difference between when the team is doing what they should do versus when they do something really great and come together for something entirely special. There is no category A or B when you’re picking Team Wins – every team is different and has a different set of goals and wins – don’t compare yourself to other teams – focus on what your wins are and make sure to celebrate them.

Figuring out the Team

The hardest part about any new team you join – whether new or existing – is figuring them out. In the early days, it is where all of your time should be spent, because it is all that matters. Learning who they are, what their role is, what they can contribute, what you need them to contribute, what their ups and downs are – essentially what value they bring to the team as a whole. Once you have the team figured out, then you can start planning what the team is to do and where you need to take them

Assembling the Team

The first task in any new project you lead is assembling the team. You need a group that will deliver, try new ideas, keep the focus on what is important, grind it out when the chips are down, work at a steady pace from beginning to end, learn new skills, and discard old ones. And above all else, you need leaders, for whatever you are doing, you won’t be able to make all the decisions all the time and you need to make sure your team is able to empower themselves and each other to make those decisions.
