Careers are exactly like video games. You start off not knowing what to do so you plod along and stuff “happens”. Then you figure out you want to get better at something, perhaps even “specialize”. So you get good at that thing, invest in yourself, get the tools and you become better at what you do. Know Your Assumptions

Assumptions are needed when you have too many variables at play. When everything is fluid, you need something solid at play to minimize the variables at work. The key then when making assumptions is to make sure you know what you’re assuming, why and knowing what the impact will be. Then your assumption has reason and strength in moving forward.  It might change over time, but at least now you’ll have a reason for it.

The Goal of your Code Repository

We don’t often ourselves this question, but it is a valid one. Is it a dumping ground? Is there a structure to it? Do you want to be able to deploy to a new environment with a script? Does each team need a sandbox? Do you want teams to have sandboxes? How long will it live? Project Delays

What delays your projects? If you work outside, the weather is a monster factor. If you need internet, not having a connection is the big issue. If you don’t have the right tools, you’re fighting against that the entire time. All these are yes or no answers – you either have it or you don’t – call these fixed delays. The Imperfect Internet

I recently tried out satellite internet. Not perfect, but not bad. Trees… leaves in particular… especially when drenched in rain, are a major barrier to communication. What this translates into is an obstruction map that is 80% clear, which means on a good day, I have great internet for 48 minutes of each hour, the rest of the time, it depends, literally, on which way the leaves are blowing. And they are not always blowing in the right direction. Pre Mass Remote – 2020 – this imperfection in Internet access would be okay, there were many things I could do
