The Best is Yet To Come

If you’re not feeling it, if you’re stuck in the mire, if there are currently more questions than answers, that means a few things. The Final Test

The Last Test is the one that will determine your future. It’s not the last test, because now you have to take another one. And that won’t be the last one either. There is never a last test, only the next test. And after the Next Test, you want to push for there to be another one, because that’s how you keep moving forward.

Who Found What?

Does it matter who found the answer? Or that the answer was found? Does it matter that it was the expert who found the answer or someone else who found a random post on the issue? What matters? Is the problem solved, and can everyone move on? Or is what matters that you found the answer? You can’t have both, one moves you forward, the other holds you back.

The Bigger Picture

When fixing something small, don’t forget to step back and look at the bigger picture. Does this apply elsewhere? Can we make this better in other parts of our software? What is the impact of deploying this elsewhere? What if as part of this work, we start building a framework that we can keep building on? Fix the immediate problem, don’t get lost in the forest, and plan for the next iteration. You wouldn’t put a cast on your  arm in case you break it next week but you would think twice about that next jump.

The Truth in Errors

Errors happen. Errors about Errors happen. Errors about Errors about Errors happen. An error can send you down a different path. An error can also be a false positive. The point is, sometimes the error is wrong and you need to keep looking.
