The Overuse of Community

Communities are everywhere you look. Software, sports, hobbies, gaming, building, bird-watching, coding, thinking, etc, etc. But are they communities? Do they all share the same characteristics and agree to the same norms? Or are they all thrown together with the hope that they someday might become a community, that one day they could come together? I’ve always looked at a community as not something you sign up for, but something that comes together, when you’re not expecting it, like a team culture, it happens and then it’s there. What’s the Difference?

There is no better feeling than doing an alright job and having people see it as amazing. “But that’s not my best work?  I have so much more I can do.” “This is great, you don’t need to go further… why would you do more?” People can’t tell the difference between your best and okay work -possibly because whatever you deliver comes through better than they could have imagined – so anything is great. But you know the difference, you can see the difference, and it’s probably driving you nuts they think your “okay” work is amazing when you know

Don’t Stop

Sure, Don’t Stop Believing, but in general, don’t stop. If it were easy, everyone would be doing it, but they aren’t, they stopped. They stopped when it became tough, complicated, and frustrating. You didn’t. You didn’t stop. Don’t start now. BTW – my favourite cover.

That’s not What I meant to say…

“I didn’t say that…” But that’s how it was interpreted. There is always room for confusion in individual conversations but if all your conversations are being misinterpreted then there are two problems; Your audience is not listening; they only hear what they want to hear, regardless of what you want to say. You’re not being clear. Both can be fixed. Change your audience, and clear up your words.
