What do I have to do to get Better?

People ask this question all the time. What their real question is – “How do I get better than everyone else quicker?” Sure, there probably is. Maybe you could stay up late and put in a lot of extra hours, spend more time at the gym then you normally do find some lifehacks here and there. But you know all that and you know all that better than anyone else. The real question you need to be asking yourself is – “Why am not trying to get better?”. Now that’s the starting point.

Learn from Others

The best way to learn is to learn from others. Learn what they have done to become successful. Watch what they do (and stop talking about it). Don’t share the fact that you’re learning from them. Listen to what has and has not worked. And then, ask questions, get feedback on your approach, what are you doing that works and what are you doing that is not. The Secret Question

I love the secret questions. I love knowing when they are coming. I Built a Frankenstein

And so should you. If you’ve never built a Frankenstein, you’ve never had to solve a problem that forced you to use all of your skills and knowledge in a particular area. You never had that moment of going – “well it doesn’t look like much, but it works”. Frankesteins get built when everyone around you goes – “can’t be done, this is impossible, it won’t work” – and then you do it. Build a Frankenstein, proudly proclaim it for what it is and then start the next one – even bigger than before.

Nothing is Ready

There is a strong probability that things will not be ready for you at that new contract, job, internship, event, etc. And they will ask you to wait. Don’t. Before starting, have a plan that assumes the worst, that nothing is available, that all you have is a notebook, and start from there. And don’t think you’re doing this to show everyone how good you are or how keen you are. You’re not. You’re doing this because you’re not going to lose a day doing nothing when you could have been creating something.
