The Key to Growth

The only way to grow, to maintain growth, is to stay uncomfortable. When we are comfortable, growth does not occur, we become satisfied, we “made it”, and we “are here”. But to grow, to get better, and to improve, requires shedding your comfort and becoming uncomfortable once more.

Got an Idea?

Run with it or let it go – no need to let that eat at you until there is nothing left. If you don’t want it, pass it along. But don’t give into the “woulda, shoulda, coulda” game – because that game just pushes you further to the edge.

Find what Needs Leading

There are places, everywhere in what you are doing where leaders are needed.  It doesn’t need to be the next big assignment or that massive project coming down the pipe. It can be fixing the bugs sitting in triage. It can be suggesting a field to simplify the approach to creating stories. It can be creating a dashboard that shows what is happening in your group. We need leaders everywhere, we just don’t have enough ready to step up.

You Won’t Get There Overnight

But you will bit by bit, each day, if you put in the effort. This month is Inktober – one of many prompts across many disciplines focused on incremental results, not over a day, but days, hours, and bit by bit. Seth Godin has crystallized this perfectly when he talks about progress – Drip by Drip.

The Team Helped

If you’re leading a team, there is only what the team has accomplished. There is no “I” that has been done.  Everyone contributed in some fashion – whether freeing you up to do that work, doing the leg work for that work, taking on extra bugs so you could focus, or not disturbing you while you did all that work. They might not have banged out all the code, but what they did do is help give you the opportunity, time, and space to accomplish that work. The team helped.
