There are two ways to look at this statement.

1. I didn’t know, but I tried to figure it out.
2. I didn’t know, but I didn’t want to try to figure it out.

In both cases, you still don’t know, however, if you take option 1, you show that you want to know, you want to figure it out, and you want to learn more.
