The Inversion of your work

I watched Jim Lee do this incredible drawing on YouTube once of Magneto. It all started from his hand, where it’s white, nothing but a blank page, but every line and shadow emerges from that clean and white component as crisp as the page he started on. From there, everything inherits and extends from. It’s an inversion of work – nothing had to be done in that one spot, but around it, everything sprang from it to create an incredible masterpiece. No other comments, just beyond impressive.

It Doesn’t Work the Way I Thought

Great, figure out another way to make it work. This has been the problem that programmers and developers have been faced with for years and years on end. API is more limited than they thought. Overuse and you get throttled. Data is hoarded instead of shared. Capabilities are limited without lots of workarounds. Great, it doesn’t work the way you thought; the absolutely amazing part of your journey starts to happen. Go make it work the way you thought.

You’re at the right spot, but maybe you’re not at the table yet. You’re doing all the right things to earn a spot, but for some reason have not been formally invited. You’re probably contributing more than the people who are there and generating more value than anyone wants to realize. But still no seat at the table. At this point, you have two options; Forcing your seat is easy: I have this role, I should be there, give me a seat. Setting your own table is harder; you have to create the table, you have to sit at it,

TechDebt is becoming the Dream

Tech debt was always meant to be avoided, but now it is becoming the dream. As we feel the need to move faster and faster, mistakes are made every day, and the mountain of debt grows. Engineers are being rehired to fix Techdebt and not build new product because the push to get to the market first is still prevalent – nothing else matters. If we continue at this rate, software development will no longer be a creative endeavour, but a cleaning exercise.

We used to be Organized?

We used to be organized, now we hope pointing an AI agent at our work is going to resolve the issue. It won’t. That’s not how it works. You need some base level of organization and standards to make it work. Also, have you noticed how organized teams are able to adopt AI faster?
