Build and Wait

When shrink-wrapped software was the game, you built it, you put it on a CD, you let your sales and marketing teams took over. And you waited. And if the sales weren’t coming in, you made the call to make the next version, put it out the door, do more sales and marketing. And wait again. Finding Opportunities

When things are going well – you don’t need to search for opportunities; they are all there all the time, all coming your way. In addition to them all coming your way, you might find that people aren’t as picky as they otherwise might be. But when things aren’t going well, opportunities are scant, they are hard to find, and those that exist are absurdly finicky about everything and anything. Where does the time go?

If you’re busy, it goes into work. If you’re sitting around, it goes into your phone. If you have a plan, work gets chipped away. If you’re overloaded, it goes into wondering how you are going to get it all done. If you’re underloaded, it goes into dreaming of when you can be overloaded again. If you’re relaxed, it goes into the pursuit of your many hobbies. And if you’re bored, you’re probably wondering what do with all this time. The point is it all goes somewhere, but we will never see what that there is, but just trust that

Tracking It

I waver between tracking everything and then nothing. I can’t lie, I like seeing the stats and the progress – I’m a sucker for charts – and I like tracking my process in goals and tracking. And sometimes there reaches a point where I’m too busy, and I don’t track it. And then I start again. Some would call this lack of consistency or focusing on priorities. Whatever the case, I know I’ll start again once I get out of the busy season, but for now – I’ll focus on getting the work done and come back to it. All
