Right now, I am mid-thrall in gearing up for winter. Putting summer stuff away. Storing wood. Cleaning up messes. Making sure the snowblower works. Making sure I have gas for the snowblower. Everything and anything to make the winter that much simpler to live through. Whether it’s mild or wild, you always need to prep for the winter. But do we do the same for our work seasons?

The best meeting is the “No Meeting” Meeting, because the team realized they had it all figured out. The group culture proved that everyone had the right information they needed. The systems and practices are available to everyone and not hidden by faux walls. The team is empowered to not walk but run. The Best Meeting, is the “No Meeting” Meeting not because it doesn’t need to happen and saves an hour, but because it is happening every hour of every day. You just don’t see it, but it’s there and it’s working.

When you think you have it, 10 minutes later there is a post about something undoing what you have just spent the last few days trying to master. It can be demoralizing that the thing you figured out is now gone and replaced. But maybe everyone hasn’t seen it. Or maybe, based on their environment, they cannot even use it. Whatever the case, don’t downgrade your learning, the work you put in, the effort you went to get there – just because someone took what you learned and made it faster. “If it was that simple, everyone would be doing

I watched Jim Lee do this incredible drawing on YouTube once of Magneto. It all started from his hand, where it’s white, nothing but a blank page, but every line and shadow emerges from that clean and white component as crisp as the page he started on. From there, everything inherits and extends from. It’s an inversion of work – nothing had to be done in that one spot, but around it, everything sprang from it to create an incredible masterpiece. No other comments, just beyond impressive.

Great, figure out another way to make it work. This has been the problem that programmers and developers have been faced with for years and years on end. API is more limited than they thought. Overuse and you get throttled. Data is hoarded instead of shared. Capabilities are limited without lots of workarounds. Great, it doesn’t work the way you thought; the absolutely amazing part of your journey starts to happen. Go make it work the way you thought.
