This is where it Gets Awkward

In any process, whether it’s code, leadership, team development, building, whichever, there is a part where it gets awkward. Perhaps it’s a hypothesis that failed. Maybe your design fell on its face. Maybe the presentation on team growth fell flat. Whatever it is, there is that awkward moment of silence where you can either look it in the eye and figure out how to fix or you can let it sit there, stare at it, get mad at it, blame everyone around you for it because “hey, I didn’t ask for this awkwardness”. But if you can embrace it and

That First Step is a Doozy

Of course, it’s going to be a doozy. What first step wasn’t a doozy? What thing did you ever start for the first time that the first step wasn’t the hardest? The first time you walked. The first code you ever wrote. The first bug you ever worked on. If it wasn’t a doozy, it wouldn’t be worth doing. And if it wasn’t a doozy, it wasn’t something new.

Reinventing the Wheel

It’s been done, there are no more wheels to invent. You can make them faster, you can use different materials, you can control them remotely and I’m sure there are a hundred other things you can do to tweak them and make them better. But you can’t reinvent them. The same might be for your product, your code, your team – you can’t reinvent it, it’s there, it works, it might need some tweaks, but the base is there. The old expression is – “don’t throw the baby out with the bath water” (not sure who would ever do this)

We Can Code Anything

I once worked with someone who would start complex problem/requirements discussions with this statement. It immediately set the room and easy while at the same time getting us all pumped up for a challenge. “WE CAN CODE ANYTHING” Those four words conveyed so much… We’ll figure this out. I have confidence in everyone’s abilities in the room. We can do this together. We might not know the answer, but we know the path to get there. I have faith. Not only is it something fun to say, but it just makes so much sense, as a software development team –

I Love API Development

I love coding against APIs that other people have written. I think part of it is the entire idea around someone giving you a view into their world and how to do things within it and then you as a developer being able to connect that view to other views (APIs) that people have built. It’s that big wide-open connection of libraries that is just so completely interesting to see and work with. I say this because I think in any aspect of software development, you need to have a favourite thing that you do. A piece of code that
