When you least expect it. From a KB article that no one read. One day, a library you are using will die, and you’ll have to rewrite that code. My advice? Make sure what you are doing with that library is well-written, well-designed, and makes complete logical sense (comments and documentation are a given). Because one day, that super critical library you are working with, will die.

Kick-Offs are perfect; everyone is happy, and everything is going perfectly – nothing has gone sideways at this point. Optimism flows endlessly. But then the project starts, and over time, the optimism and happiness of the kick-off fade away. On a long-running project, you need to work to recapture that kick-off energy; you need to keep it going when times are tough, and reality has started to set in. It’s never a Quick Question – it starts at 2 mins, goes to 5, then 10, maybe 20, and possibly ends at 30. That’s not a bad thing; you need information, and someone can help you. Don’t let your Never Shipped get too big; it will swallow you whole. It doesn’t matter who uses it or who gets it, just that you shipped. I once built a product, put it out there, and for months no one wanted it. On the day I shut it down, a university called asking for a demo to use it. You never know until you ship. This is more than dipping your toe in the water; this is putting your whole foot in, this is wading into your waist. And the water’s cold. So most leave it to their toe.
